Carlson wins 2018 Cordner Medal

Monday 24 September 2018

Jarrod Carlson has capped a stellar first year with the University Blacks, winning the 2018 Cordner Medal as the best and fairest player in the Seniors.

Joining the club from Marcellin this year, Carlson was a standout player for the Blacks through the midfield, providing invaluable leadership for the younger players around him.

"To join this great club has been one of the best things I've done in my footy career. From an outsider coming in, it stands for all the good things about community sport - it's all about the people, it's all about the right things," Carlson said at the Blacks' Presentation Afternoon.

"I've just been blown away by the quality of people and what the club stands for. To be a part of that is something I'm really grateful for."

Carlson was named in the best players 12 times from 20 games, including two best on ground performances against Mazenod during the home and away season to continue a stellar career in the VAFA.

Jordan Quaile was runner-up in the Seniors vote count and was also recognised for his outstanding season by winning the Brendan Keilar Medal, as voted by the playing group.

John Vrodos was awarded Finals MVP after booting six goals across the Blacks' two finals matches, Josh Steadman won the Coach's Award and Campbell Moorfield's terrific season at full back earned him the Rising Star.

Will Mills won the Austin Edwards Perpetual Trophy as the Reserves best and fairest, with Douglas Arnold coming second and also winning the Finals MVP.

Nick Cibiras won the Phoenix best and fairest ahead of Rohan Cleary, while Mildura product Cooper Direen won the Under 19s best and fairest.
