Seniors

Round 5 saw the University Blacks and Beaumaris Sharks resume their battles from last season. The Blacks visited the Shark Park hoping to expel some bad memories of the one goal loss last year.

The first quarter was largely played in the Blacks forward half, but some poor kicking at goal hurt the Blacks and only allowed them to go into the quarter time break with an 11 point lead. The first quarter more than lived up to last season’s encounters with some physical contests taking place all across the ground.

The second quarter saw see both teams scoring more freely exchanging goal for goal for the entirety of the quarter. Things could have been worse for the Blacks had it not been for the valiant defending of Campbell Moorfield who has been so reliable all year long and Joel Ernest driving the ball forward from half back in his first senior game of the year. Neither team could be separated at half time both sitting on 40 points apiece.

As we’ve seen so much already this year the Blacks put the foot down in the third quarter kicking five goals to only one solitary goal from Beaumaris. Lachlan Huntington and John Vrodos were again kicking multiple goals, while Alastair Robbins and Matthew Burt were making their presence felt in any contest that came their way. This solid quarter saw the Blacks head into the final change up by 26 points.

Early in the final quarter the Blacks put Beaumaris even further to the sword piling on three quick goals to see the normally vocal crowd turn somewhat quiet! From here the game meandered out with both teams exchanging goals late in the game. The final siren sounded and the Blacks unbeaten run is set to continue for another week with a solid 33-point victory! Jordan Quaile was awarded the man of the match after an expert display of class and silky smooth skills throughout the midfield brigade.

The next three matches are just as mouth-watering with the Blacks coming up against top teams in Caulfield, St Bernards and Old Carey. What a treat for amateur football fans!!
