The Black Hawk
It was a tough day at the office for both the Senior and Reserve teams at Harry Trott Oval on Saturday, with both sides going down to Collegians.
The Reserves found plenty of the footy early, but couldn’t quite translate that onto the scoreboard as Collegians established an early lead.
It was the second quarter proved the difference between the two sides, with the Lions booting six goals to the Blacks’ one and going into the main break 49 points ahead.
To their credit, the Blacks stuck to their guns in the third term kicking three goals and showing some improvement in their attacking half, despite the hosts kicking another four goals of their own.
In what was a minor victory, the Blacks were able to win the final term, but the damage had been done in the first half when Collegians were able to kick ten goals to two to set up the win.
The Seniors kept the ship relatively steady for large parts of their match, but again gave up a half time lead, albeit two points, to be overrun in the dying stages of the game.
Collegians pulled away in the third term with five majors, setting up a 12-point lead at the last change.
Despite an early Blacks goal in the last quarter, the Lions had all the answers on their home patch running away with the win on the back of a three-goal term.
Lochie Dornauf backed up his six goals from last week with yet another bag of six and provided constant headaches to the Collegians defence, however the Blacks would probably prefer to spread the load across their forwards more evenly and find more avenues to goal.
Vice-captain Josh Steadman was first class in the ruck while Alastair Robbins was more than handy, bobbing up for a goal after playing in defence last week against Old Trinity.
After two disappointing losses to start the season, the Blacks will be desperate to secure four premiership points against arch rivals University Blues next week as the two sides meet for their yearly ANZAC Day clash.
