New leaders for 2019

Wednesday 03 April 2019

The University Blacks will head into the 2019 season with two new co-captains at the helm.

Josh Steadman and Jordan Quaile will lead the Blacks this year, with Campbell Moorfield appointed as vice-captain.

Uni Blacks Senior coach Cam Roberts was full of praise for the Club’s newest leaders.

“It’s a fantastic result for Josh, Jordan and Campbell. They’ve all worked extremely hard over the pre-season and have earned the complete respect of the playing and coaching group,” he said.

“Josh has served as vice-captain under Bede Mahon for the last couple of seasons which was a role he excelled in and Jordan was a vice-captain last year as well, so we feel they’re both ready to step into the captaincy in 2019.

“Although he’s only young, Campbell plays like a veteran and he’s really come into his own over the course of the summer months, so it’s a great opportunity for him to take some strides in a leadership role.”

All three players are coming off terrific 2018 seasons. Quaile finished second in the Blacks’ senior best and fairest, Steadman collected the Coach’s Award and Moorfield was awarded the Rising Star.

Roberts also praised outgoing skipper Bede Mahon, who will be stepping down after six years leading the playing group.

“Bede has been an outstanding captain of the Blacks and has been pivotal in growing the fantastic culture that we have both on and off the field,” he said.

“It was a selfless decision from Bede to step back this year. He has a young family along with getting to the pointy end of his medical studies, and he wants to see the next generation of Blacks leaders emerge.

“He and the likes of Jarrod Carlson and Charlie Richardson will be great on-field mentors for our new leaders.”

The Blacks kick off their campaign against Monash Blues at the University Oval this Saturday, with the Club also holding its Family Day. Tickets for the event can be purchased here.
