Uni Blacks and Old Melburnians hit it out on the stunning Junction Oval for the 3^rd (as far as I can remember) ever Batten/Lacey/Legoe(U19’s)/Hardy Cup.

 

The two’s didn’t start the day off exactly as planned, but against a side who has not won a game this year… by any LESS than 8 goals, it was a solid effort.

 

After a few weeks off, Levi seemingly only found out he was playing the early game when he arrived at 11.30, but he still managed to kick the dew off well. Daniel “The Quiet Man” Johns played like a senior player masquerading as a reserves player against a senior player masquerading as a reserves player, and did it quite convincingly.

 

Toto the Monkey was good in the 2^nd half, cleaning up in the backline, running through the middle, quoting Dumb n Dumber, delivering into the forward line and tackling hard, complemented by Jesso who was running through the middle, quoting the Weekly Times, marking strongly, hip-and-shouldering the goal post and also tackling hard.

 

Having declared himself fit on Thursday, Kizza limped around on one leg looking like a wounded horse. Several calls to pull out the curtain and shoot him were ignored by the medical staff, and he played on with valor. The credibility of the medical staff has not been questioned after Jimmy (3 bags) Fuller was helped from the ground without the use of either of his legs after being on the receiving end of the sort of treatment he usually hands out, then returned 20 minutes later.

 

Dubois was smashing in the ruck, following up with a smashing house party (which was held in a cul de sac), complete with bon champagne, hors d’oeuvres, moet and escargot. Without sounding like a cliché, the party was en vogue, les fille belle’s were maison and the interior was definitely chic.

Congratulations to Rob “Moose” Mackie, who played his 150^th game for the Blacks, the vast majority of which have been in the Seniors. A remarkable feat by the ever-green, considering he missed several seasons while living in London and travelling the world in search of the perfect, un-fadable tan. Well done Moose, you found it. You are an asset to the club, and we hope you will be around for another 150.

 

OM’s were always going to be a big ask on their home ground, with plenty of quality players in their team and a depth evidenced by the success of their two’s. The game was an arm-wrestle for the first two quarters, with the Blacks finishing the second strongly to go into the long break 3 points up.

 

The 3^rd quarter started with an early goal to OM’s before Paul Kempton claimed a questionable mark which wasn’t paid by the umpire. He was then deemed to have held the ball when tackled, followed by a 25m penalty when he questioned the umpire as to why, instead of being awarded with a mark, he was forced to hand the ball over. Observers believe the tide of the entire game turned moments later, as the player who received the 25m penalty attempted to play on, slipped at the crucial moment, was then tackled by Paul Kempton, who then received the free kick, sent the ball into the forward line, and a goal was scored. From then on, Dubois wasn’t the only Blacker having a party.

 

Bolts was reinvented as a midfielder (try that, Sheeds) while J (He’s almost as crazy as you, Johnny) Grigg and the Big Savaloy were a pair to be reckoned with up forward with “Beef” Vanderloo also bagging 3. No doubt Sav will be up and about on the track this week, setting the standard for both time and intensity at training, as per usual.

 

After 2 years, Aaron Rau finally paid off, dominating in the centre with 26 kicks and 4 handballs. Not one to be modest, he was later quoted at the Clyde stating “That’s crap. I had heaps more than that.”

 

Lacey shrugged another tag against his old school, using the big, wide spaces at his leisure, while Cadd was delightful down back and the Hissey Fit proved himself a more than capable mid-fielder, giving the selectors plenty to think about with a few quality players to come back in.
