Uni Blacks Thirds are out and about
21 April 2010
Due to a first round forfeiture by Bulleen, the Uni Black Three’s took to the lush surface of the Crawford for what was to be an historic day. A blend of under 19’s and senior players saw many introductions before the game, including of coach to players. Lack of familiarity was not going to get in the way of a Blacks onslaught. The main theme of the day was one of enjoyment, together with moving the ball on quickly and sharing it around, meant that the team operated with aplomb and as one, belying lack of time together on the track.
The hyphen, Scott Hobijn-Allen rucked tirelessly against much bigger opposition. At ground level, Kevin Stark provided a display of how to play in the middle that warmed the cockles of the hearts of old timers. James Murfett seemed to have the ball on a string and set many a thing up in the early part of the game. Matt McVilley, Ben Laing, Jarrod Bingham and Tyran Bell were strong mainstays of the mids and provided a great example to the youngsters having a taste of senior footy. Jack Hume controlled the forward structure which enabled Lethal Leigh Dadswell to kick a handy 5. He was ably assisted by 3 other bags of 4 from Callum Lawford, Tom Whale and Dave Cooper. Jarrod Young and Jed Arbuckle showed poise. Luke Plant, Grant Astall, Jack Sher, Dan Kissane, Nick Hale and Jo Rokebrand all got a taste and enjoyed the day beating their older, heavier and slower opponents. And lastly our two Smiths, Fergus and Todd, great stalwarts, initial controllers of the backline and then providing a display in the middle.
Overall some great movement of footy, looking for the outlet, getting into a dangerous position to enable the sharing of the footy in a productive manner. It was a joy and a pleasure to watch this inaugural team shine as it did. The boys made sure their first blow out after the pre-season was a worthy one and with a 10 goal third term ensured the day a success on the scoreboard, ending up winning by over 20 goals and keeping the opposition goalless for 3 quarters. Magnificent! And with that behind us, we look forward to next week!
