With the winter weather well and truly set in for the year, the clubbies headed over to Chelmsworth Park to line up against Old Ivanhoe in what was always going to be a wet and windy affair. With the temperature just nudging over 10 degrees, The Blacks rallied in the change room before the game to warm up the legs and chew the fat on escapades of the night before (BOG went to Hando for snagging a 6 foot 3 giant). As organised as ever, the boys came to realisation that there was no tape for strapping, no team board, no bench and a captain who was running late due to furniture removals (word is he owns a lot of mirrors). Someone had to take charge. A 2 minute warm up taken by Pest was always going to be flaunt with danger, but it worked a treat. The Blacks came out full of energy in the first quarter, totally dominating a shell-shocked Old Ivanhoe in all aspects of the game, despite fully capitalising on the scoreboard. We were all over them.

The second quarter was one to forget as Old Ivanhoe used the wind and wet conditions to their advantage, pulling the margin back to 2 points at the main break. Two goals in two minutes from Greeny and a dog running on the field were the only highlights of the quarter.

The boys came out at half time ready to atone for the disappointing second quarter. After a rev up from Merls, the brains trust experimented and released Pup Ross from the backline, throwing him up forward to great affect. For those of you who missed it, Pup has already stitched up goal of the year with a remarkable bend it like Beckham soccer from a puddle right on the boundary line. It is still debatable if the goal was ar*e or class, but never the less, that effort will take some beating. With a rebounding backline who was solid all day, plenty of run from the midfield brigade, and Cords, Clint, and Brooksy providing plenty of options around the wings, the Blacks pilled on seven goals to one to take a convincing lead.

The final quarter was the icing on the cake with the Blacks finishing strong and bagging a 74 point victory and keeping Old Ivanhoe goalless for the term. It was a very pleasing game with every player making a contribution and beating their man.

The boys sung the song loudly in the rooms after the game, as a nervous buzz quickly circulated the room - it was not a good day to be nominated ‘pilot’ of the victory chopper. Thanks to a couple of quick hand pumps before take off, Greeny’s rotator blade manage to shake off the frost and deliver a couple of swings. As always the beers tasted better after a win.

A special thanks must go out to those clubbies who offered to fill in for the thirds this week. Top effort fellas!
