Fight Night!
Fight Night!
1 December 2010
The Blacks' favourite Irish brawler, Seamus 'Mad Dog' McDaid enters the ring this Thursday night (2 December - 7pm) in his first professional bout at the South Melbourne venue, Neverland.
Known to many as the occasionally incomprehensible but always hilarious 3rds match reporter, Seamus caught up with the Spam King Johnny Admin to chat about the upcoming bout.
JA:
Just because we're curious, why are you doing this?
Mad Dog:
I love boxing and it’s always been an ambition of mine to do this but never had the guts before! Also I needed something to keep me off the streets during the footy off season.
JA:
What is the format of the fight? Are you wearing a helmet?
MD: Hell no! The fight is scheduled for three 2 minute rounds. No helmets, it's professionally judged so the winner is by knockout or points. The bout is officially sanctioned by the Victorian Boxing Authority - it's the real deal.
JA:
Crikey. How long have you been training for this? Are you ready to rumble?
MD: Have trained for the last 8 weeks. I’d say it’s the most intense I’ve ever trained. If I’m not ready now I’ll never be (although that doesn’t mean I am actually ready!!).
JA:
What do you know about your opponent?
MD: His name’s Martin (
JA note - rubbish name
). I’ve trained along with him and we’ve sparred a few times. He’s much stronger then me but I’d have him in the speed stakes so it should be a good clash of styles.
JA:
Martin sounds like a diver. Do you have a stage name?
MD: Well the Blacks community christened me “Monsoon” (
JA note: Monsoon McDaid - raining down the pain / bring your umbrella Martin cos' it's painy season etc
) but my promoter didn’t like it so he’s gone for “Mad Dog”. I preferred “Monsoon” but I’ve learnt the first lesson in pro-boxing – the promoter holds all the cards!!
JA:
What song are you entering to? Blacks theme song surely...
MD: That's a surprise - although I guarantee it will have you in stitches!!
JA:
Give us a Muhammad Ali style prediction please...
MD: All I can say is I’m first fight of the night and I’d advise getting to your seats early because this one ain’t going the distance!!!
Seamus would love all the support possible, and Martin needs some heckling, so please come along if you are interested. Tickets cannot be purchased at the door, so if you are keen to attend, please contact Huw Lacey at
huw.lacey@aar.com.au
BEFORE 2.00pm tomorrow!
