Close gets Cigar
16 September 2008
Club 18 spearhead Oliver Close was again prominent in proceedings at this years league vote count, taking out the goal kicking award for Club 18 division 2. The award was sweet revenge for Close who had been runner up for the accolade in the previous two years. Lightening-quick on the lead and sure-of-hand it was only a matter of time before he would take home this prestigious medal. At the media conference following, Close thanked his team-mates and made particular mention to the now famous ‘goalden triangle’ (Ablethorpe, Howsen and Close). He said “the way we worked together was fantastic, and if I didn’t have them chopping me off and getting in my space from time to time, who knows how many I could have kicked this season”. In a short season, littered with low scoring matches, Close consistently kept the scorers on their toes bagging 37 for the year including a haul of 7 goals, 8 behinds on a blustery day at Caulfield. It will be interesting to see how opposition teams counteract the triangle in 2009!
