Rd 15 v Old Ivanhoe
9 August 2011
Arriving at Chelsworth Park to take on Old Ivanhoe, The Black Bear felt a little homesick. The misty, wooded surrounds took The Black Bear right back to his homelands in the Northern Rockies. Wandering through the trees down to the creek behind the Southern goals forced the usually stoic Black Bear to hold back a tear, as he remembered the family he left behind. Pappa Bear, the provider of the sleuth, who believed that a father’s love should be hard but fair. Mumma Bear, always up before the sun, forever mending something, cooking something, eternally smelling of freshly baked bread. Standing there in the rain, sharpening his claws on the side of a tree, with the leaves crunching underfoot, The Black Cear couldn’t help but think of Little Cubby Bear, who was only a ball of fur with a nose when The Black Bear waved goodbye on that fateful day so many years ago.

It seems that Old Ivanhoe is missing out on a revenue stream that could rival the pokie machines of the big Eastern Districts clubs. I’m not sure if anyone at Ivanhoe has realised, but their rooms could definitely be rented out as a weekend destination for Melburnians who are keen for the authentic camping experience without having to drive out of Zone 2. With the timber paneling and rustic ambiance all they need is a fireplace to cook some marshmallows and the heads of a few bison on the walls to make it the ultimate suburban camping destination.

Chucky Richardson was another Blacker to fall prey to a little homesickness before the game, if by homesickness you mean violent gastroenteritis, however a quick visit to Ivanhoe Home Hardware to get some cement and a trowel had him sealed up water-tight and ready to play.
As we walked into the rooms to get ready, the sun was shining and the day looked to be a nice one. As we walked out of the rooms to begin the warm up, it was raining. It was raining so, that your socks were wet before you even put them on. It was raining so, that Bolts got bogged up to his waist and we needed Tugboat to pull him out. It was raining so, that P-Mac just took the lids off the water bottles and left them outside to fill them up. It was raining so, that Anderson Cooper was seen on the sidelines, huddled under an umbrella, talking into a microphone about how hard it was raining.
But enough about football, let’s talk about Trivia Night.
Mitch Aitken performed so well in his debut at the Black Spot on Thursday night he got the call-up to host the Trivia night, along with The Pitt Monster. They did a fine job trawling through the questions with hardly a c-bomb or f-bomb between them, looking like a pair of mid-80’s rock-stars on the wrong end of a four-year cocaine/heroin/fondue binge (“I’ve spent four years and $380,000 getting here, why would I stop now?”).
Dave Batten almost broke MY ribs with his break dance routine. Jack’s sister broke some sort of record in the scull, then broke Tom Oldfield’s heart when his charming best just wasn’t good enough, and it was very good. Someone found a classical Violinist to make a guest appearance, but didn’t get the response he deserved.
A great night had by all. Well done to Pitty and Flighty for pulling it all together.
