Rd 11 v Brighton

2s
With the late exit of Lachy Crameri from the team, it was decided that he should be replaced with a similar type of player. Unfortunately we couldn’t find any 6’3, 90kg 20yr olds who enjoy hurting opponents and generally bustling around, so Darren “Dazzler” Colopy got the late call up instead. After seeing his performance on Thursday night as the stand-in host of The Black Spot, Big Lukey Oh knew he could handle himself under pressure. Dazzler arrived slightly late, possibly because he needed to take his car in for a service, having driven from Port Melbourne to Carlton, to Kew, to Brighton all in the one morning.

The Brighton Oval was looking a little sandy, with waves lapping at the edge, and very little to hold back the roaring wind blowing diagonally across it. Windy days tend to provide opportunity for some big hangers, and Gibbo was on the receiving end of the first of them, with his opponent spending so much time up there before taking the grab a hostess came past and offered him a headset.

Brighton played better into the wind than against it, leaving the Magoos a little perturbed, and 8-goals down at half time. Coach Lukey implored for nothing more than respect for ourselves by the end of the game, and to show a bit of character. Playing against the wind in the 3rd, we managed to keep the scores even, before making a genuine run for it in the last, kicking 6 unanswered goals. Ando kicked a few, and also took the second best hanger of the day.

Jack “two whites to one yolk” Heeley was best afield with one arm, while Adam “The Monster” Pit was second best (but BOG at Bundy Sundy).

It’s a funny feeling at the end of a game such as this. The momentary pleasure from having played well in the second half is always interrupted by the realisation that, had we stopped the rot earlier in the second quarter, we would have been a chance to beat the undefeated ladder-leaders.

Tom “The Whippet” Purcell was unfortunately injured in the opening moments of the senior game, with a more-than-suspected broken leg. When The Black Bear enquired as to his health later in the day, The Whippet replied with “A few more of these green cigar things and they can amputate if they like.” So it sounds like he was being looked after.

The Blacks kicked the first 3 goals of the match into the relentless wind, to get things going, then with the wind in the second, only inaccurate kicking from Brighton kept the game close. With a bit of argy-bargy on the way into the rooms at half time, a big third quarter was expected, but Brighton kicked truly with the wind to take a 4-goal lead into the last.

Given the delightful design of the Brighton Oval, the Blacks crowd behind our goals in the last quarter were all stuck looking directly at the sun, taking their frustrations out on the poor full-back.

Bolts provided a few early highlights, booting 3 goals, and Scotty Dornauf slammed another home, but it just wasn’t enough to get us over the line. Tom “The Tugboat” Howgate was good all day, reminding this scribe of a race-ready thoroughbred flying out of defence, while Tommy “El Swine” Napier was again very low and very hard.

A week off this week, so let’s make sure we use it to get extra fit, ready for the last seven rounds before finals.
