Rd 10 v Caulfield
30 June 2011
2s
A big crowd was present at the Uni Main for a Pavvy Lunch featuring some of the stars from the last 50 years of the Blacks, with 5 former players regaling their favourite footy story to the captivated diners. The Uni Main was a picture. Unfortunately the picture was of a pig-sty. The sky was blue, but the ground was muddy and as slippery as the The Pavvy floor at 9pm on Big Sunday.
The two’s put on quite a performance, with Steven Flight “Risk” providing plenty of highlights with his punishing left boot, including a delightful goal from bursting out of a pack, Holty providing a genuine option down forward and Josh O’Malley getting a heap of it down back. Drysedale stuck his hand up for an elevation with 3 goals and plenty of it around the ground, Tony Evans was a lot better than 5th best (and looking disarmingly handsome), but no biggie, while Murf put in one of his better games for the year, including a huge pack mark in front of the crowd.
Righto, righto, let’s just keep a lid on it.
BLO’s boys have certainly hit some form of late, so perhaps we should have a quick look at the behaviours behind the success. In the last few weeks we have been harder and lower for longer, and able to put the opposition under some serious pressure whenever they have it. Tackling has been ferocious, which I like.

There was a bit of breeze around for the late game, but it certainly wasn’t strong enough to explain the scoreline below. The first quarter was reasonably even, the second was very Black, then the third was all Caulfield, with “The Fields” (as it helpfully said on the front of their jumpers, presumably to remind any recent concussion victims who they play for) turning a 5-goal deficit into a 2-goal lead going into the final break. Huw Lacey almost tool the mark of the year in front of the crowd, and Tommy Napier put his hand up for goal of the year with a brilliant snap from the chin-up bars.
With the herd of former Blacks Champions listening in, Wooly gave one of the great sprays, finishing off by turning away from the players and growling at the muddy ground. I think he may have been angry.
The Black Men responded, the last quarter providing some memorable highlights, such as the free kick received on our goal line due to a Fielder attempting to climb the goalpost like he was trying to shake some coconuts out of the top, followed a few minutes later by Huw Lacey attempting to climb on his opposition and receiving a free for being shepherded out of a marking contest by the poor bloke who Huw had tried to climb. Unlucky.
The Blacks kept The Fields scoreless in the last to come home with a wet sail, keeping all the former champions happy, and their Cardiologists even happier.
