Rd 09 v Oakleigh
20 June 2011
2s
A quick walk around the Oakleigh ground revealed that the near-wing had been recently used as a replacement venue for the Quambatook Tractor Pull, and should be avoided as a path towards goal. A howling wind heading to the North End added to interesting conditions.
Big Lukey Oh’s boys used the wind poorly in the first, kicking like a mule, and went into the first break significantly less ahead than they should have been. The second was better, but still Lukey wasn’t completely happy with the boys, asking for a bit more. With John Kosch stepping back into the fray after another facial fracture a few weeks ago, and a midfield also featuring Scott Hissey and Michael Cousens, there was always room for improvement.
The third quarter was reasonably good, with Big Holty sticking up the dukes with abandon, only outmarked by teammates Crameri and Pitt, and Scotty Myers providing some run around the mud-pit.
The last quarter was a lot of fun, with the Magoos making the most of the drying conditions to come away with a casual 14-goal win.
With Caulfield this week, there is no time to get ahead of ourselves, as a real test awaits.
Can’t wait.

I know I should set the scene for the senior game, talk you through quarter-by-quarter, mentioning the good players as I go, but I really just want to talk about Chucky Richardson’s 3rd quarter hanger. Did anyone capture it? I’m pretty sure it would win us a big ute on the Footy Show. He got tunneled by his opponent when he was already really high, then went horizontal while 8ft off the ground, before snatching the mark (don’t snatch) and plummeting back down to ground, horizontal the whole way. Upon witnessing this, Tommy Angel remarked that he had never seen Chuck take a contested mark, let alone a sweet hanger. I look forward to seeing more of it, Chuck.
I also want to talk about Scott Dornauf being winded in the first quarter when backing into a pack that had a combined weight of 300kg and speed of 65km/h. So basically he was hit by a small car. It turns out Scott D doesn’t like being winded, so he set about for the rest of the game using his shoulders as battering rams, entering packs at speed, and exiting with several Krushers left behind wondering what just happened. He was lower and harder, simple as that. He was also best-afield. If he keeps this up, he’s a chance for The Black Bear Top Five Favourite Players of 2011.
I really want to talk about Josh Gaylor taking a mark very late in the final term, 30m out, straight in front, the Blacks 5 points down, having given up a four-goal lead. A situation that would turn the most stoic among us to jelly. The pressure proving even greater due to the fact that it was such a kickable goal. He calmly walked back and kicked through it, with no hint of nerves. Very impressive.
