Rd 07 v Beaumaris
2 June 2011
Apologies for the tardiness of the Black Bear, but I hit a bit of traffic on Punt Rd on the way back from Beaumaris and just got home.

The long trip down to Beaumaris left Lukey’s Boys a little pent-up and ready to do some damage on arrival. That they did, with a sharp first quarter taking them to a 3-goal lead at the first change, then more of the same having us 4-goals up at the half.
The third quarter was very dark, with Crameri, J, proving useful as a ruck/forward combo with Yuley, while Andrew Jesse was completely ruining himself in response to BLO questioning the endeavor of the “older players” last week. Certainly no question marks this week, except to question whether he could still breathe when he came off for a rest. Tom Brennan was getting in and under in the middle, while the other Crameri (L) held down half back with a strong jaw-line and slightly aggressive appearance.
The game was predominantly played between the 50m lines in the last quarter, with neither side able to break through the defensive scrum. The coaching panel was getting frustrated, until they realised we were 8 goals up, so there wasn’t much to worry about.

Some players naturally relish the hunt, some need persuasion. It is becoming clear that the team we have been putting out this year is one that needs some persuasion to begin to hunt the opposition. Unfortunately, that inspiration came from being 6 goals down at half time against a side who we really should have been beating. Coach Wooly gave some terse words at half time, imploring the boys to just forget everything and play some footy.
The Black Men came out flying in the third, tackling ferociously, chasing hard, attacking the ball and, most importantly, putting the opposition under pressure. This pressure showed on the scoreboard, with 5 goals to 2 for the quarter. The Rusty one himself stood up, along with Tom “The Whippet” Purcell, but it was a case of too little too late and too much energy spent trying to claw back, the final result blowing out due to some junk-time goals that let us down.
The Black Bear doesn’t like not winning, so let’s keep him happy this week.
Let’s arrive ready to play, and hunt from the start.
Don’t give them an inch or a sniff.
Don’t even let them breathe.
Smother them in Black.
The season starts now.
