Rd 06 v Old Brighton
23 May 2011
2s
The wind on Saturday morning was turbulent, and the performance of the Blacks was no more reliable. Old Brighton reserves had not lost a game coming into Rd 6, and for a short time in the first half, it looked as though today might have been their day. BLO’s two’s started well in the first, but Brighton kicked back to even the scores by half time.
From then on all roads led to Brighton, with the Blacks barely providing resistance. Mitch "Caucasian Ang Christou" Aitken was good on the wing, while Big Tom Oldfield was working hard across half back helped out by Timmy McCullagh. Al Defegely stepped up for his first game at the level for the season, and proved he is more than up to it, while Tommy Brennan and Mick Handscombe continued their good form of late.
At one stage, Cramers attempted to mend a broken picket in the revered University Main Fence by using an opponents head in its place, but unfortunately the repairs did not hold. Perhaps a little Selleys Liquid Nails will help next time.

The ones started with a bang, Jordy kicking 3 in the first ten minutes, holding onto a 2-goal lead at the first break. However, the second quarter must have had Wooley pulling his hair out, with his boys wasting opportunities to go into the long break with only a 3 goal lead when it should have been 7. Tommy “Soar like an” Angel lived up to his nickname, providing a highlight with a delightful hanger in front of the crowd – see this week’s photos for the moment captured. Ando tried to match the highlight with a desperate tackle deep in the forward pocket, followed by a goal from the athletics track, showing he has skill to go with his courage and effort.
In the third, Brighton got the first few goals and got their backs up, resembling a pack of hyenas running around the savannah, while the Blacks continued to kick points. New player Harrie Lahy showed some exciting capability, displaying a fend-off of several opponents that left this writer giving fellow observers a look that said “did you see that?” then asking fellow observers “Did you see that?” The later asking other observers "Did you see that?" Impressive.
The last quarter was difficult to watch, not just because the sun had pretty much gone down and it was dark. Brighton continued on their way, with the Blacks providing witches-hats for them to run around.
In the humble opinion of this humble Bear, the missing ingredient at the moment is pressure on the opposition. They weren’t scared to get the ball. They should be.
Let’s work on that.
