Clubbies Rd 4 v Monash

Saturday 8th May started with the 20km trek from the leafy surrounds of Melbourne Uni to the desolate plains of Clayton.

Saturday was a big day for redheads Peter Rowse and Matt McInnes.
For those with a few minutes to spare, have a look at the list of best ever redhead sportspeople:
Congratulations to Matt McInnes, who was announced as captain on Saturday.
Commiserations must go to Big Mick Dwyer, who arrived at a pre-season run and announced “Boys, I go alright on the park, I’m happy to be your Centre Half Forward and captain this year”. Unfortunately Mick you’ll have to stick to giving everyone some red hot stock tips.
Mark “Peter” Rowse was in vintage form on Saturday, kicking the first two goals of the game. I’m told this was Prowsey’s first goal in 3 years. Michael Eskander has reliably informed me that Prowsey was 40/1 for first goal, and 150/1 for the first two.
After getting over the disappointment of missing out on the captaincy, Mick Dwyer was taking grabs all over the place, unfortunately his kicking was also ‘all over the place’.  Pat Duncan, James Green, Smashface, Handy/Troll and Corey Watts were tearing the centre square to bits, helping the blacks go into quarter time with a very healthy lead, 5.6 to 0.0.
The second quarter saw more of the same for the blacks, with Pat Duncan continuing his absolute domination of the ruck. J. Green was making the most of this domination, with a couple of excellent centre breaks finishing in goals. Buster and Corey Watts were running all over the place, delivering the ball forward in an excellent fashion, with S. Lane slotting through a very handy goal.
Ed Dowling was putting on a display at full back, dishing the odd ‘don’t argue’ to the Monash forwards, in a way that reminded me of Greg Inglis’ work for Australia on Friday night. Cords, Jock and Scooter down back were doing an excellent job repelling the Monash attacks.
Bruiser and Willo were working well as a team early, taking contested grabs and talking about which blue shirt and  which pair of blue jeans they would wear that night!
At half time, the game was just about over.
The third quarter saw Merls and A. Moffat start to make the most of our strength up forward. Moff was dominating his Scottish opponent, with the Scot intent on stepping on Moff’s toes, punching him in the ribs and boring him to death with his constant barrage of verbal diarrhoea.  Moff put together a couple of strong grabs on the lead and slotted two goals.
Drummo then kicked one from the goal square that Nick Martin would have been proud of, followed by another after an amazing pack mark that Wayne Carey would have been proud of!
The last quarter saw Monash string a few goals together in a disappointing lapse of concentration for the men in black and blue.
There were only two positives for the blacks in the last quarter:
1 - Griggy
Griggy’s banana goal from next to the point post was one of the better goals ever kicked by a Uni Blacks player.
2- Brick
The best thing for the day happened in the last quarter, with the ball kicked out to the Will DeFegely wing. Bricka was the intended target, and his direct opponent (Monash No 41) ended up with the ball in his hands, and Brick on his hammer.
For those of you who weren’t fortunate enough to have been at the game, think back to 1993 and Alan Jakovich at the top of his game (and weight). This contest was like Alan competing against his body double..
With both Brick and no 41 running at full pace (6 or 7km/h) the Monash player managed to run away from Brick and deliver to a Monash team-mate.
Not a bad win for the blacks, hopefully we can put together 4 quarters next week.
