2010 Rd06 - Old Ivanhoe - Home

2s
With the dappled morning rain wetting the fallen autumn leaves of college crescent, the Heart & Soul may have started the day feeling a little morose, more interested in huddling under a doona on the couch, watching Rage and eating Mum’s porridge. Unfortunately for us, Ivanhoe came ready to play, but lucky for us, only errant kicking left us still within reach at quarter time.

Coach Baz got the smelling salts out at the first break, and the boys responded well, with recent promotee Cal “Carl Williams” Lawford slotting a few snazzy goals and Big Flighty moving very well through the middle.

The Heart & Soul went into the long break 3 points in arrears but from then on, things got real. Like, really real. Those within the club who might be hoping to break into the side after an extended break might have been wondering exactly where the weak spot is. The boys piled on ten goals to one in the second half, to cement themselves on top of the ladder, and surely send a shiver through the competition.

Belly was super up forward, kicking 3, while Scott “ideal human” Hissey got a heap of kicks. Evan “My nickname is Scants, not Evo” Scantleton was standing tall in his first game for a while, with Burch proving that he was also more than up to the standard.

Ivanhoe sits atop the ladder in the seniors, and it would seem that is for good reason. Their pressure and ball use was as good as we have seen this season, and certainly shows us what will be required to go all the way in 2010.

We were still in it at half time, only 3 goals down, but the 3rd term saw 6 goals to 3, putting the Blacks 6 goals down, even having scored 3 points on top of the 6 already scored, which was matched by Ivanhoe’s 3 on top of their base of 6 (Adam Spencer would love this). A gallant effort in the last term was hampered by missed shots at goal, and Ivanhoe took the points.

Chris “I’m only playing so I can go on the footy trip” Walsh was superb at full back against fine opposition, with Levi “if Matt A asks, I’ve got his kegs” Kalms using his left boot with damaging effect, Dan “I don’t feel like I’ve played unless I lose an internal organ” Costello playing some inspired football and Huw “I want to play reserves so I get arvo tea” Lacey taking his non-selection in the Rep side personally, playing like he had something to prove.

Big Richard “Smiley” Wood is a definite crowd favourite, not always pretty, but always effective, and Scotty “Smooth” Weekly always uses the ball well.

We head out to Oakley this week to take on one of the leading teams of the competition, so let’s make sure we are prepared, and play a full 4 quarters.
