2010 Rd05 - Hampton - Away

On a day that had the Black Bear regretting his choice of long-sleeves and jeans, the Blacks headed down the Nepean to take on Hampton on the Boss James reserve. Sunscreen was the call of the day, but it seemed that a few of the boys may have spilled some on their boots, with the first half being all about wasted opportunities. 16 scoring shots to 7 giving the Blacks just a 2-goal lead. Perhaps the boys were too busy concentrating on the yummy-mummy's who were still there from the Aus-kick session before our game.

Gutters was looking great across half-back, arching his back to run around players, then arching his back while standing still, then arching his back while sitting down. Let’s be honest, the man has good posture.

LVK reprised his senior role from the ‘05 premiership team, playing the quarter-back, picking up the loose ball and driving it long into our forward line. Timmy Schaefer provided some highlights with a snap from the far lane of Bluff Rd the best of his 4 goals. Matty “has anyone seen my 13 kegs?” Ablethorpe could have finished with a few more if it wasn’t for his unselfish play, and Belly gave one an absolute roost from outside the arc.

Having watched a few of his games this year, I have decided I would rather get hit by a family sedan at 60km/h than get tackled by Hugh Symon, there is simply more chance of survival with the car. Andrew Jesse played the decoy beautifully all day, including being named best on ground, while Huggo and Pablo Heeley were stoic on the ball and in the backline. Big Simon Yule rucked superbly and deserved his name in the record.

A highlight for me was witnessing a bit of argy-bargy up the ground, followed by the Hampton full-forward, who was 80m from the action, screaming at the top of his lungs “KNOCK HIM THE F$@K OUT!!”

The seniors certainly showed plenty on the weekend. The footy played during the second quarter was equal to anything you are likely to see in Premier B this year. Lace was running hard and using the ball beautifully, Chucky Richardson looked like he had just been pulled out of the green-room in Waimea Bay, John Kosch was like a Jeep Wrangler, ploughing through anything in his path, and Dave Robbins was enjoying himself very much with a few cheeky goals here and there, along with plenty of rough and tumble.

Jordy stood up again with another 3 goals, Scotty Weekley displayed extreme agility for a man his size, and Mr Cadd came into the game under an injury cloud then played like a force of nature.

All credit to Hampton for fighting back in the last, but the lead did turn out to be insurmountable, with Scotty Hissey getting one last goal after the siren to make sure of it.
