2010 Rd03 - Old Carey - Away
28 April 2010
2s
The two’s gave quite the performance on the weekend. The backline may have been a little put out that Coach Baz chose to highlight the one goal Carey had scored by half time, and give the back six a spray for not doing their job right. His words proved effective, though, and the back six started concentrating, not letting another one through.
Matty Ablethorpe was a spearhead down forward, leading hard and kicking straight to get 5, while Scotty Myers continued his good form, kicking another 4 rippers. Tommy Napier showed that he is the best thing to come out of Bears Lagoon since the Bearsy Dog Races (line up 23 kelpies, 2 labradors, 5 greyhounds, 3 border-collies, 4 Jack Russels, 2 terriers and a Hungarian Wischler 40 metres from their owners while they all call and whistle for their dog, let them go. Hilarity ensues).
Big Richard Wood was best on ground, dominating in the air all over the place, supported by Andrew “the Blackest man on earth” Jesse and Hubert Symon. Robert Scarlett must have been doing something right down back, while Torns had another great game and will move up to the ones this week after a very good month of footy.

Unfortunately the ones could not match the effort of the two’s, consistently being beaten to the ball in a low-scoring match. A goalless 3rd quarter was embarrassing, but it provided the tonic to get the boys fired up. Unfortunately it was a case of too little, too late, with Huw Lacey’s 3 goals in the last 5 minutes the highlight of an otherwise wayward quarter which netted 4 goals and 7 points. Bolts lead by example all day, showing the younger boys what is required when things aren’t going your way, while Charlie “Sam Twycross” Richardson’s tackling and attack on the ball was fantastic. Andy “Rusty Nail” Else fought hard in the ruck, with Dave “brother of Matt” McVilley and Kane “future Justice of the Supreme Court” Loxley helping him out.
With a big day for the Blacks this weekend, a far more committed effort is expected, which will also make the Black Bear happy. And when the Black Bear is happy, everyone wins.
