2010 Rd02 - Old Essendon H

2s
On a balmy April afternoon the magoo’s started the day off with a super first quarter, Torney using the ball deftly into the forward 50 and Matty Ablethorpe proving quite the target in front of goals. Coach Baz and Kempo were again far away from the bench, looking into the sun from the tennis courts, watching the game through a series of mirrors.

The second quarter was even better than the first, with some fantastic footy being played by all on the ground. 10 unanswered goals left the Blacks 17 goals up by half-time, with questionable motivations for coming back out after the break.

The second half felt like it took a very long time, and I wasn’t paying much attention.

In a stealthy move by Coach Baz, Torney was given 4th best for the day, decreasing his chance of promotion, meaning Baz might have him for one more week. Scott Myers didn’t hurt his own chances of promotion, booting 6 majors, taking his total for the first two rounds to 11. Other front-runners were Mitch “Little Wooly” Hall and Andrew “My red ute drives me wild” Jesse. Hugh "Man-child" Symon got all man-child on everything, and big Simon Yule "Keep" was very good in the ruck. Schaefer and O’Halloran got involved in the goals with three each and Robbie Scar barely raised a sweat in the backline.

With the mercury just tipping over 45 degrees in the shade, the big boys came out sweating. Captain Bol-tron lead the way with a blistering first quarter, marking or crumbing everything, well supported by Scotty Weekly and Dan Costello on ground level. The Black Men went into the first break one goal up.

The second quarter was a very dark shade of grey, despite the sunshine, with 4 goals to one giving the Blacks a 4 goal lead at half time. The third quarter belonged to the young guns, with Pitt, Foster and Gaylor all over the place, kicking goals with abandon.

The second half was a very Black affair, with the boys managing not to think too much about the antics they would get up to later that night at the Clyde Hotel, and instead concentrating on the job at hand.

Dave Robbins managed to snag a few goals, while up the other end Chris Walsh was brave against a man-child who was 6 inches and 30 kg’s ahead of him. Daniel Costello was in and under all day, tackling like a cowboy at the rodeo, and received the suit voucher for his efforts.

Best on ground at Girls Night at the Clyde goes to Tim Schaefer, for organizing the event, with other big performers including Robbie “DJ” Scarlett and the Melbourne Uni Netball Club.

With such fantastic support coming from the Netball girls for our social function, let’s make sure their social functions are just as successful, starting with their first function at the Cornish Arms Hotel on the night of Rd 5, Sat 8th May. Details of the night will be circulated closer to the time, but for now, make sure you pencil it into your diary.

In Expat Blacks news, a huge congratulations goes out to Stuart A.D.D Sandiford for managing to convince the beautiful Rhiannon to marry him. From all reports he popped the question just after sunrise on a gorgeous beach in Indonesia… after drinking for 34 hours, running naked through the hotel lobby, getting locked up for four hours and stealing a tuk tuk to ride home. Seriously Stu and Rhiz, congratulations.
