2010 Rd01 - Old Haileybury (Away)

Season 2010 started off with a bang as an armada of Black headed down the Nepean to take on Old Haileybury at McKinnon Reserve. With the customary turnover of players this year, the reserves had plenty of new faces, along with some old stalwarts (Jesso).
The first quarter started off a little scrappy, with the blacks heading into the first break with 2 goals to none, however the second quarter opened right up with six goals unanswered, to see the Blacks go into the long break up by 8. Coach Baz has been watching the footy on the telly too much, and is now coaching from the next suburb over, using walkie-talkies and a series of closed-loop video systems to keep his eye on the game. Baz is yet to answer the accusation that he was actually on the other end of Naitanui’s phone on Friday night.
The second half saw a similar effort, with the two’s ending with 15 goals to two, placing the heart and souls on top of the ladder for the first time in several years. In his own words, dual Liston medalist David Robbins was caught with the ball “double figures”, giving him an honest welcome to Amateur footy.
Bryce Shaw threw his weight around, with his timing on a bump up under an opponents guard leaving the poor man wishing he had slept through his alarm, and the sound of air rushing out of lungs was audible on the other side of the ground. Sweet.
Scott “MyStore” Myers kicked 5 in a super performance while Torney was best-afield and amongst the goalkickers.
A great effort by the boys, and one which we hope can be repeated this week against Old Essendon.

The late game started promising with the big boys peppering the goals like a duck risotto. However some wayward kicking (I’m looking at you, Pitt-monster (anonymity is a veil of security I should treat with more respect)), saw us go into the long break only 3 points up with 17 scoring shots to 9, and plenty of work to do.
John Kosch is as good as a new recruit after only playing a handful of games last year, and was playing like a man possessed, in and under and using his left foot deftly. Jordan Foster reminded the Black Bear of a younger, taller, better-looking, more athletic and skillful version of himself, taking the big grabs and leading hard across half-forward in a six-goal, best-afield performance, while Aaron "Caddy Shack is a sweet movie" Cadd was tough as nails all day.
The second half was all Haileybury as they straight-kicked their way to the lead, forcing the Blacks to dig deep and show a bit of ticker. Coach Wooly’s ¾-time address is now under investigation for plagiarism by the estate of E.J. Whitten… “I want you to inspire me!” but whatever he said worked, as the Blacks willed their way into the contest to come away with a very close victory.
Dave McVilley was as tough as old boots and as skillful as a surgeon, while Andrew “Rusty-Nail” Else just keeps getting better and better. Chris Walsh was super on the last line of defense, not losing anything from his year in the country.
A good effort by the boys, but let’s not leave it to the last minute this week against Old Essendon at the Uni Main Oval, my heart can't take it.
