2010 Rd 13 - Old Ivanhoe (Away)
15 July 2010

The Blacks boys were greeted by a dirty old day at Chelmsworth Park to take on Old Ivanhoe. A howling breeze heading towards the left-forward pocket was enough to make more than a few boys wish they had stayed in bed, particularly the backmen.
Big Nick ‘Budois’ Dubois bagged four of the best, with his Adelaide mate, Scott ‘le Snake’ Hissey bagging 3 of his own to be named in the best, despite trying to take Hally out of the game with a stray elbow that Barry Hall would have been sheepish about.
Andrew ‘how about those pies’ Jesse was again best on ground, taking his odds for the B&F down to $1.01, while Tommy Napier, who played his junior footy at Serpentine, in case you didn’t know, was super in trying conditions.
Simon ‘you’ll keep’ Yule provided the highlight of the day by lining up in the ruck for a center bounce, calling out to Hissey, who was on the wing, to expect the ball coming his way, then punching the ball straight down Hissey’s throat. An attempt to repeat the play resulted in Yuley elbowing himself in the eye while tripping on his own shoulder-blades.
With 13 wins and a % just under 400, the two’s juggernaught continues to roll along, and personally, I am quite happy for it to continue that way. Baz is an absolute pain when they lose.

The two’s players who were brave enough to stay around for the late game were treated to a dead-set hum-dinger. The Blacks went with the wind in the first quarter and held the Hoer’s scoreless to our 3 goals, before said Hoer’s replied in the second, going into the long break 4 goals each.
The wind in the third quarter was comedic, but the Blacks struggled to take advantage of it early, allowing the Hoer’s 2 rare goals into the breeze. After a few injuries to the Blacks, the remaining troops stood up and bagged a few to go into the last break with only a 2-goal lead. Leaving the task ahead of them to come home with a win.
Amazingly, given the strength of the wind going against the Blacks (a 5 year old was seen flying over the oval attached to a stray kite), the majority of play in the last quarter was in our half of the ground. The speed at which Ivanhoe was able to get the ball to their end was only matched by the tenacity with which the Blacks fought to get the ball back down to ours. The Hoer’s got an early goal to be just one down, before Dave ‘Dad’ Robbins made several attempts to kick the winner from directly into the wind, proving impossible. I know it was impossible, because Robbo couldn’t do it.
The midfield and backs kept fighting hard to give the forwards possession, and Angus ‘a-bone’ Drysedale somehow managed to get clear in the forward line and retrieve a bouncing ball, kicking for goal with several opposition players about to run him down, somehow managing to keep the ball in a straight line long enough to get through the big sticks before the wind took it away and landed it somewhere in Kew.
Moments later, John Kosch gathered a center clearance and tried to thump it through for a long goal, only to be robbed by the closest of margins, the ball bouncing back into play and continuing to roll with the wind, leaving the crowd of Blacks supporters behind the goal holding their heads in their hands. The Hoer’s got another goal back with 5 minutes to play in the last, but the Blacks we dogged in their determination to get through to the final siren, eventually finishing up by 8 points. A super effort by the boys, matched only by the Ivanhoe efforts at afternoon tea.
