The rain had been falling on the picturesque Melbourne High School Old Boys football ground all night on Friday, and the Blacks boys were met with a center square more suited to a motorcross race than a game of football. The outfield was still in good condition, however, so that is where the Blacks directed traffic. Tom O’Halloran was left free on the wing and picked up quite a bit of the ball early on, while Matty Ablethorpe got things started with a few goals. David Cooper was the unfortunate recipient of a dislocated ankle, leaving the squeamish among us reaching for the bucket, and Jordan Foster reaching for his mobile phone to take a few photos of the deformed joint for posterity.

The second quarter saw the acronym fire up and kick 4 goals to the Blacks five, leaving Coach Baz more than a little peeved at the long break, and eager to place the proverbial foot on the proverbial throat. The boys responded well in the third, with 8 unanswered goals putting the game well and truly on ice, much like Evo’s hammy.

The last quarter was pretty much about trying to get Matty Ablethorpe his tenth goal, which might have been an easy task had he not started thinking to himself that the last bloke who kicked ten was Jack Riewoldt, and the one before that was Jonathon Brown, and if I kick ten I’ll be as good as them, and maybe it’s not too late for me to get drafted, Podsiadly got drafted at 28 and look where he is now, I could be playing on the MCG next week and I’ll have to keep my Thursday night free coz I’ll be on The Footy Show and I wonder what I’ll do with my first paycheck, will they give me new boots coz I like my boots maybe I’ll have to paint them black so they can’t see what brand they are. Unfortunately he missed three shots in the last quarter, and as a result will still be playing for the Blacks next week, but we’re happy with it that way.

The Blacks were let off in the first by some inaccurate kicking with the wind by the Unicorns, but the second quarter showed that we had come to play, with seven goals to one giving a handy lead at the long break.

Charlie ‘Chugger’ Richardson provided an early highlight by slotting a sweet goal from the boundary line after dodging several would-be tacklers. No doubt the inter-league selectors were watching, with Chuck being named in the Vic under 23’s squad. With his boyish good looks, swift feet and hard attack on the footy, he’s one player whose odds are shortening for both the B&F and, more importantly, the Black Bear’s top 5 of 2010.

Locko provided the next highlight by taking a mark 35m out from goal, turning to see no one ahead of him, taking a bounce, fumbling the ball from 30m out all the way to the goal line, then falling over and impersonating an epileptic at a rave, trying to kick it through for a goal, missing it several times before finally getting pounced on by the opposition and getting a rushed behind. If there had been a rock on the ground, he would have crawled under it.

Dan Costello gave another super performance, being on the receiving end of a tag for once. During the third quarter the crowd was wondering what he was doing as he ran over to his dad on the sidelines, but all was clear as Dan held up his dislocated little finger for his dad to pop back in. Once back in, Dingo Dan went back out to continue playing. They do breed them tough down at Costello land.
