With the sun shining as the Black Bear left Northcote on Saturday morning, a beautiful day was expected, however the weather-man was proved correct with 80% chance of 5-10mm proving an accurate forecast.

Baz’s boys started a little slowly in the first, but 5 goals to one in the second, followed by 3 to one in the third had the game wrapped up. Belly and LVK were prowling around the backline with intent, with Drys-a-bone helping out, proving himself to be versatile, and laconic.

Scotty ‘So hot right now’ Myers came back down to the two’s with a fire in the belly and bagged five sweet little snags, with Andrew ‘I go see-through in the cold’ Jesse getting three of his own.

Levi Kalms was called at 10.30am, but it turns out it takes more than an hour to grab your footy gear, jump in the car, drive to the TAB, put a few bets on for the day, go past maccas for breakfast, head into the city and get fitted for a suit, grab a quick massage, study for an exam, drive out to Glen Iris, view an open-house inspection, take a knitting class, get back in the car, head to TH King reserve, marvel at the feat of modern engineering that is the Monash Freeway, head instead to the library to find out more about the prominent Australian General Sir John Monash, delight in the fact that he was a civil engineer, and his only daughter was named Bertha, jump back in the car to get back to the TH King reserve just in time to run to the bench half way through the first quarter and give a sheepish look to coach Baz.

There was a real buzz around the ground as the seniors ran out, due mostly to the high-voltage power-lines hanging ominously above the ground from one end to the other*. The senior’s warm-up was not exactly text-book, consisting of standing in a circle, trying to kick footballs as high as possible into said power-lines, stretching hamstrings perhaps more than required at that stage.

All the Black Bear can remember from the game was adrenaline coursing through his bear-veins at some stage after half time. At least it felt like adrenaline, it may instead have been the mix of dangerous amounts of caffeine and sugar running through his veins after the purchase of the ‘$6 coffee and monster muffin super special’, a deal only bettered by the afternoon tea at the main.

Dave Robbins came back after a week off and was all the better for it. Someone forgot to tell him we were playing with a soaking-wet ball, so he continued to pick it up off the deck with one hand, dodge a few would-be tacklers and slam it through for a goal.

Good efforts by Dan Cos and Dave Batten for doing super jobs all day, and Matty Oh! for continually rebounding out of the backline in trying conditions, while the Pitt-monster and Jodie Foster were good on a hard day for big men.

The highlight of the day was definitely seeing the faces of the players when told that, even though they had just played a game of football in 10 degree weather, with rain and mud all over them, they had more bad news. The showers were cold.

* DNA fragmentation. A 2009 study at the University of Basel in Switzerland found that intermittent (but not continuous) exposure of human cells to a 50 Hz electromagnetic field at a flux density of 1 mT (or 10 G) induced a slight but significant increase of DNA fragmentation in the Comet assay.[9] However that level of exposure is already above current established safety exposure limits.
