2009 R14 - Ormond (Away)

Apologies for the late posting of this week’s Match Report. The Black Bear has been suffering from a little sun-stroke after spending the weekend in Coolum with The Black Bearess.

Given the heart-breaking distance between the Black Bear and the Mighty Blacks on the weekend, this match report is based solely on rumour and innuendo. Regular readers of the Herald Sun will recognise this as “quality journalism”, from the school of Andrew “If there is one scientist who says the globe isn’t warming, we shouldn’t spend a cent on it!” Bolt.

The Black Bear needn’t be in Victoria to feel the rush of that winning feeling, having challenged the Bearess to several bicycle races around the grounds of the Coolum Hyatt Regency, 3 games of tennis, 18 holes of golf, and 4 wrestles, emerging triumphant in all.

But I digress…

Barrett’s Boys did him proud on the weekend, turning on quite the show, in a remarkably one-sided game for a contest between 4th and 6th. Scants was awarded best afield, but has since been dropped from the side, along with Cal, due to the choice of video played during the Black Spot. Apologies to all who were present, particularly the large contingent of ex-Blackers who were at the Clyde to welcome Ben Sullivan home, who were forced to sit through the crazy ramblings of a paedophile, simply because he shared the name of a Blacker. Bring back Doug. Bring back Nugget…

Dubois and Dan Costello were also very good. Good enough, in fact, to both get the call-up to the ones this week. Welcome, boys. Immerse yourself in the contest with valor and brutality. Two of my favourite players, certainly not lacking in Black-Bearish attributes, arguably neither quite as handsome, but the bar is high.

Clint Hare bagged 4 goals, before shooting himself in the foot by heading over to NZ for a ski, while The Shaef and Tommy Oh were delightful up forward.

Another big one this week, but at this time of year, they all are.

The ones got off to another cracking start, possibly the result of a warm-up schedule that involves every single player, fully kitted up, kicking the ball around at 3 ¼ time of the two’s. I remember the days when, as a senior player, you would watch the two’s until the last break, eat a pie, go inside halfway through the last quarter, chuck your boots on, get a rub, drain the snake, run on the spot counting to ten 15 times, get yelled at by the Coach, drain the snake, run out there, have a kick around, get yelled at by the Captain, shake your opponents hand hard enough for him to know he’s going to have a long day, then it was on. How I yearn for the good-old days.

The good start was enough to get the boys over the line, with Matty Oh throwing his weight around all day, Scott Hissey looking like the love-child of Tony Modra and Ben Cousins, Joo Joo Vanderloo showing a glimpse of his potential and Big Matt Savige playing his one game for the month, kicking 4. Look forward to seeing him again in 4 weeks.
