Apologies must firstly go to the indefatigable Blacks team manager, Mick Commaduer, for the Black Bear turning up late for his interchange steward duties. Coupled with a missing central umpire and no goal umpire, it made for an interesting morning for Mick. I appeal to everyone around the club to make sure they get down and help him out in whatever capacity they can, so that the Black Bear can sleep in next week.
It was an ugly and close first half, with the Blacks pulling away in the third quarter. Dan “The Man” Costello was welcomed back into the fold with plenty of hard hits and tackles. He amassed a huge number of possessions, however his 6 months in the U.S of A. seems to have done nothing to improve his kicking. Lucky he will make up for it by destroying anyone who gets between him and the ball.
The Trestle Table was good, kicking 5 from full-forward with plenty of searching leads and marking out front, while Schae-Schae…Schae-Schaefa Shaefer was good in his second game up in the two’s.
Ed “Small Engine” Hardy was excellent in 2 minute bursts of fury before heading off to the bench to get his breath back, helped in the middle by Tim “Kevin Spacey (The Usual Suspect)” Legoe and Matt “Low down” Thompson.
Evan Scantleton finished the game off with a monster goal that reminded the Black Bear of himself back in the hey-day, if a little more modest.

The Old Haileybury lineup wasn’t quite what was expected, with no sign of Harvey, Leowe, Wakelin, Lockett, Winmar or Barker, and the Black Men took advantage of this with a stunning first ten minutes, kicking 5 unanswered goals, adding one more by the end of the quarter to go into the first break with a sizeable lead.
The second quarter was much of the same, with another 6 piled on. The second-gamer, Kempton, showed more signs that he could come in handy, given a little more experience, while Yeomans, the oldest 27yr old in Australia, was at his best, even bagging a goal on the left.
The second half was a more even affair, with Haileybury winning the last, although the proverbial foot was lifted slightly from the pedal at that stage. With 12 goal scorers, the load was spread around, although Kempton did finish with 5. Dougy Batten was named best for his relentless efforts turning defense into attack, while the Pitt-Monster monstered plenty of opposition defenders with the strength you can only get from hunting wild boars with your bare hands, and Scott Hissey Fit and Captain LVK both looked very good on the field while playing some very good-looking football.
Looks like my theory of “No Bolton, No Blacks” has gone out the window. Let’s hope the boys can prove me wrong again this week.
Just make sure no-one kicks to the Ormond end this Saturday, that’s our opposition.
